I work in the legal industry so just to explain a bit about what my industry is like, its very hierarchical so there’s a lot of emphasis on making sure that senior people have a lot of say and it can be you know the progression within the career is quite rigid depending on how many years you’ve done is how senior you will be.  It’s also an industry which is going through a lot of change at the moment, recently in the UK there’s been a lot of cuts to legal funding which means that it’s very difficult for people who might really need legal advice sometimes to get it because they can’t afford the fees which puts pressure on lawyers as well because we have a responsibility to make sure that people are getting advice that they need.  It’s also going through a change in terms of who is providing what advice so there’s a division between the work that solicitors and barristers do and traditionally solicitors would have all the client contact and then when something goes to court the barrister will take on the case and take it to court whereas increasingly barristers are doing a lot more work directly with clients because they can provide a more competitive more cost effective legal advice because they don’t have all the overheads which makes it difficult for solicitors to find a role within the system sometimes.  As a lawyer I’ve also had to learn a lot about my clients industries I work with clients in banking in shipping and what I’ve learnt is that banks tend to be quite slow and bureaucratic and they have a lot of processes to go through to make decisions whereas shipping clients tend to be much more looking for a quick decision looking for a commercial solution to the problem.
